Irwin Mark Jacobs and Jack Keil Wolf—two engineers whose groundbreaking research and designs in digital communication helped propel the information revolution—are the winners of the prestigious 2011 Marconi Society Fellowship and Prize. Both men were longtime professors at UC San Diego. The prize is sometimes referred to as the Nobel of Information Technology. More
Jack Keil Wolf, a pioneer in information theory and its applications, died in La Jolla, California on May 12 at the age of 76, following a battle with cancer. A member of both the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences, Wolf made profound contributions to digital communication and data storage technology. Wolf served as a professor of electrical and computer engineering at UC San Diego since 1984. More
For the second consecutive year, the University of California, San Diego has been named to the President’s Community Service Honor Roll with distinction for its support of volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. Based on 2010 data, UC San Diego was recognized for two exemplary learning programs, Teams in Engineering Service (TIES) and the university’s Thurgood Marshall College’s community service minor, and one outstanding community service program, Alternative Breaks. The University of California, San Diego will pay tribute to Triton parents Léon and MaryAnn Roach May 23 for their generous contributions to the UC San Diego community in memory of their son and former Triton student-athlete Léon T. Roach III. The Roach family coordinated efforts and resources to install new block wall terraces for pole vault spectators at Triton Track and Field Stadium and established the Léon T. Roach Academic Scholarship for Athletes. More than 180 people, including the campus community and Roach family and friends, volunteered to make the impressive project a reality. More
"A World of Possibilities" was the theme of this year’s benefit celebration for The Preuss School UCSD – a charter middle and high school for motivated, low-income students – and record-breaking net proceeds of $375,000 will open the door to that world a little wider for the 820 students at the school. The Preuss School has held seven annual fundraising events. More
